Principles of Journalism, class recap #10 - November 12th

This last class we had a special guest come and address us. I didn't catch his name but he was a former Bloomberg employee that made the switch to being a freelance writing a few years ago. He talked about specializing into a particular field of emphasis and becoming a master at it. He seemed like and gravitate to movie reviewing and analysis as that's what he did for his career. It was interesting to me that he could take something so specific as the movie industry and solely write about that for a living. Having been a animation major myself I was somewhat familiar with the business side of cinematography and was engaging and exciting topic to hear more about and to hear his opinion and research. but even with that interest I cant say I'd go subscribe to his site it read his writing very often. I could see the appeal though for some. He asked us why we were going into this industry and that we should have a passion for it if we wanted to do well and enjoy it. I'm not sure if I'm as into writing etc as it seems most are. I'm satisfied with learning after the fact and don't particularly enjoy being in the thick of it. On the other hand he did say some encouraging things to me, informing me that the if you go into sports broadcasting it is the most profitable part of journalism right now. Popular = profitable. He asked what will make the demanding job worth it for me? but if I work hard here it will show. Be eager and be excited and add my unique personality to it all.

This is an article I found that talked about one reporters career and how her passion influenced how she got to where she is now.

An interesting article that talks about the overlap of reporting and personal life overlap.

Principles of Journalism, class recap #9 - November 5th

Today's class presentation was about the Boston Marathon bombings. I was pretty shocked by the content and the new ways that news is being covered and supplemented by today technology. every day citizens are beginning to add to the mix their unique spin on perspectives. whether that be a video from their phone or a tweet form their twitter account. opinions and 1st hand eye witness are ever more prevalent and vocal.

I enjoyed the conversation that arose throughout the lesson.  the contrast between what the media did badly against what they did well. I first found out about the bombings from my facebook. As discussed in class today, social media has forever altered the way that we receive news. The way that journalists gather and report the news has also been changed and upgraded dramatically due to social media. We don’t need or want to wait to pick up the morning paper then next day to get the biggest headlines of the day. All we have to do to get our news is to look at the internet.

As I said there are trade offs to this new change as with any new change of gathering and sharing news here is a good article about the changes

Principles of Journalism, class recap #8 - October 29th

This week in class we talked about how ethics effects journalism. 1st off it should be known to be voulintary not forced. The press should be loyal 1st to the public and not to those it discusses or reveiws. The press idealy should be interactive between the public and the wirter/ reporter. Fairness and balance should be involved. obviously surscutious news gatehring is not exceptable as well as disorting or exagerating the facts. Great thought should be put first be considered when includig pictures or names of discussed party and how that could impact them. Adhear to your conscience. Invite conversation and an open debate. seek truth and report it! minimize harm. act indepentdently. Be accountable, nad not just for saving face. know that one thought independent means nothing but collectielly focused on one thought is very powerfull. Rules and that regulate ethics in journaism were adapted and officailly published in 1971. I also learned abouthe Potter's box method in implementing ethic consideration while writing.

I found this website great for some ethical case studies
